Hope and Mini's story
Natalie, recognising a need for suitable homes in Ireland, applied to our rehoming scheme with support from Donkey Welfare Adviser Emily Collins.
“Emily supported us through every step of the process,” Natalie says. “Our son Alba was only a few months old at the time, and Emily wanted to find the perfect duo for our family.”
Natalie and her husband have rescued many animals over the years, but this was their first time rehoming donkeys.
To prepare for their upcoming adventure, Emily provided them with all the necessary knowledge and guidance and enrolled them onto our donkey care course.
Once Natalie and her husband had completed the training and prepared a suitable environment, Emily introduced them to Hope and Mini.
These two sweet donkeys, Hope and Mini, found their way to our sanctuary after separate rescues in 2016 and 2017. They formed an unbreakable bond and were patiently waiting to find their forever home.
In May 2022, Hope and Mini started their new journey together and became the newest additions to Natalie and Paul’s family.
“Emily made everything so straightforward and we were so excited when Hope and Mini arrived at our home,” Natalie recalls.
“Being a Guardian home has been a wonderful experience. During my breast cancer treatment, Emily’s assistance was a great comfort as we knew we were completely supported.
“Hope and Mini have been with us for two years now and have become part of the family. Being around donkeys has a calming effect and we are so happy to have them in our lives.
“Alba is now three and has been growing up alongside them. It’s wonderful to see their special bond grow and they are so gentle with him. He is already helping out around the farm with their care. It’s a privilege to be able to give them a loving forever home.”
Donkey Guardians are essential to The Donkey Sanctuary. They provide dedicated care to donkeys and help free up vital sanctuary space for donkeys who require more specialist care, allowing us to reach even more donkeys and mules in need.
Could you be a Donkey Guardian and rehome a pair of donkeys or mules?
