Pudding finds friendship following historic rescue

Pudding's story

Pudding was rescued as part of one of our largest and most complex UK rescues that took place in Carmarthenshire in 2021.

The multi-agency rescue was the result of lots of hard work and collaboration between The Donkey Sanctuary and several other animal welfare organisations.

More than 70 donkeys were rescued on the day – with many of them now leading significantly happier lives in our care thanks to continued behavioural and physical veterinary support.

Thirteen-year-old Pudding’s life was bleak before she found safety in Devon. Her feet were in a horrendous state – all four hooves were severely overgrown and causing her constant discomfort. Her coat was dull and infested with lice.

Today, Pudding requires specialised shoes for her feet as the prolonged neglect she endured, combined with a lack of farriery attention, caused her hooves to become very thin.

Despite her hoof issues, Pudding leads a happy life and has bonded with another donkey called Zoe, who was also part of the Carmarthenshire rescue.

The two donkeys bonded after Zoe’s mum, Carol, was put to sleep due to severe laminitis.

Josie says: “After Zoe lost her mum, she was a bit lost. She was very close to Carol, and her passing left her quite distressed.

“Her whole demeanour changed and it was vital that we found another donkey to fill the gap left by her mum.”

Thankfully, the grooms’ task was made easier after Pudding began to quietly stand by Zoe.

“She would always make a point of being close,” Josie says. “It was a relief for everyone because we were worried about Zoe. It was lovely to see Pudding pick up on Zoe’s grief and provide her with the comfort she needed after Carol’s passing.

“Their friendship took us all by surprise as Pudding is a very independent donkey. We didn’t expect her to initiate this friendship, which to this day is still going strong.”

Pudding is now thriving in her new home.

With Christmas around the corner, Pudding and her long-eared companions will soon be taking shelter in the warmth and comfort of their stables.

They will be returning to the surrounding fields in spring next year, depending on the weather.

Josie says: “Despite her miserable background, Pudding is thriving in her new home. She is a favourite among the team because of her character.

“Every time we make the donkeys’ bed, she will pick up the straw and throw it around with delight!

“She regularly approaches her groom for a head rub and scratch.”
