Join our devoted team of volunteers

Volunteers are The Donkey Sanctuary’s true champions.

Volunteering at The Donkey Sanctuary is one of the best ways you can help to support our work to improve the lives of donkeys and mules everyday.

Whether you’re looking to volunteer in a hands-on role with our donkeys, welcome visitors or get involved with our conservation team, there are so many ways to join our incredible team of devoted volunteers.

It’s important that all of our volunteers are comfortable and confident in the volunteering roles we offer. So when starting with us we offer a comprehensive induction and continued training to our volunteers across all areas of the organisation.

Get involved today and join our wonderful team of volunteers.

Why I volunteer

Alan, Eddie and Trevor as conservation volunteers

“I like the management of the farms at The Donkey Sanctuary, not just for the donkeys but also for the local ecology. I got involved by hedge laying for the Greater Horseshoe Bat Project.”

“I get to develop my skills in the conservation work we do. I am not an expert but we do hedge laying, willow building projects, coppicing, fences and leaky dam building.”

“The satisfaction of seeing things recover, keeping it in shape. Volunteering is something we can all do and you learn new skills.”

“We hope we have made a difference to many donkeys, especially those who like individual contact. The grooms do a wonderful empathetic job and, with their guidance we can add value by spending time with donkeys who perhaps need more time.

We have worked a lot with donkeys waiting to join the Re-homing Scheme and have tried to get them accustomed to different human contact and handling, helping them be ready to meet the standards required to be re-homed.

We have gained so much through our volunteering at Woods Farm. It is so mindful, relaxing, de-stressing and keeps us grounded.”

“Seven years ago my life took a turn when I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease which equated to an early retirement. For the last three years, I have been in some kind of remission, feeling strong, wanting to become an active member of the working world again. During those three years, I have been an animal rescue supporter for many sanctuaries all over the world, including The Donkey Sanctuary.”

“I loved the TDS website from 4000 miles away in Florida, USA and this past summer I decided to come back to England, my country of birth, and volunteer for the Donkey Sanctuary (who has stolen my heart)! I admire the dedication of every volunteer and employee and how they care for, bring back to good health, and love every donkey!”

  • Due to the time, training and costs involved to volunteer hands-on with the donkeys, we are unable to support short-term volunteering. Our volunteer scheme is designed for long term, regular volunteers as we give all our volunteers thorough training to ensure that the safety of the donkeys and that of the volunteers is the uppermost priority. The scheme is set up to compliment the work of our dedicated team of staff and we need all our volunteers to be fully trained before joining us.

However, we do offer seasonal roles helping in our Visitor Centre and shop and we occasionally have short-term projects in our offices.
