Max and May thriving in new college home

Max and May's story

Max and May recently made the move to SMB College Group’s Brooksby Campus, which houses the college’s animal studies centre.

Since their move, the donkey duo has helped students build confidence with handling larger animals.

Their calm natures have been essential in their quick settling-in period at Brooksby Campus, where they have become popular members of the faculty.

Catherine Burniston, Animal Studies Facilities Supervisor at Brooksby Campus, says: “Max and May enjoy watching the alpaca and goats and are interacting well with staff and students.

“The minibuses coming and going past their paddock have not phased them in the slightest and they even tolerate the cats Pallas and Panther who can often be seen walking along the fence line around their paddocks.

“They were given a calm and quiet few weeks initially, to be allowed to settle in and bond with myself and the animal technicians.

“We also recently had a routine visit from Donkey Welfare Adviser (DWA) Julie Crane, who was really pleased with their progress.

“All being well, the students can start to work with Max and May more over the next couple of weeks.”

As part of their studies, the students at Brooksby Campus will learn how to health check and groom Max and May, pick out their hooves and lead them around campus.

While providing plenty of mental stimulation for Max and May, who have opportunities to browse on regular walks around the college, the students will receive vital education in reading donkey body language.

They will also learn how to work safely and calmly around equines, as well as providing correct nutrition, enrichment and healthcare for Max and May.

DWA Julie adds: “I’m delighted that Max and May have found a new home, not just where they will receive plenty of love and care, but where they will assist the next generation of animal care practitioners.

“The hands-on care Max and May will offer the students is invaluable, and I’m sure these wonderful donkeys will enjoy these special interactions just as much as the classes they are involved with.

“Max and May’s rehoming has been a big success. We are so grateful to their new Donkey Guardians, and to the many others around the UK who show amazing dedication and commitment every day.”
