Introduction

The third of our courses on equid dentistry is focused on dental disorders.

Research evidences the prevalence of dental disease in donkeys in the UK and Europe at around 80-93%. Despite a lack of obvious clinical signs, dental disease can be painful, especially in the later stages, in addition to causing terminal systemic illness such as colic and hyperlipaemia. An awareness of the array of developmental and acquired dental diseases suffered by equids will aid correct diagnosis and treatment. Modules will include; developmental disorders, acquired disorders, dental disorders in specialist breeds, soft tissue, and Neoplasia.

Course details

Dental health in equids potentially can decline within 5 years even with regular prophylactic care, suggesting that quality of treatment may be lacking in some instances. Provision of an accessible equid dental course will develop professional knowledge and skills in a structured, yet flexible environment. Participants will be able to take a well-informed and active role in improving the oral health of the equids worldwide.

The course will also raise critical appreciation of current research and practices.
